The Metaverse is lame

Your Metaverse

Or should I say more precisely the “Facebook” view of the Metaverse is lame.

There are reasonable and powerful new technologies out there that have, or could have some practicle applications. I spent a number of years working for the large American software engineering company PTC, and while there I sold Augmented Reality (Vuforia) and Industrial IoT software (Thingworx) into large, multinational companies in the USA and Europe.

Augmented Realty I think holds the most promise for both business and consumers for it’s ability to help train people in certain workflows and help also in a number different ways from biosciences to in the field service.

Virtual Realty is interesting to perhaps transport you into an environment where you can either observe or participate to some degree in whatever is going on in that environment.

Industrial IoT holds a ton of promise for it’s ability to connect almost anything to almost anything in the factory and beyond. This is going on right now and I think is the furthest down the field in terms of maturity.

But the Metaverse?

The Metaverse as envisioned by Mark Zuckerberg is at best a “nice to have” for people who like gaming. When you strap on a pair of Oculus goggles you step into an enhanced, immersive experience where you sort of embody…
