College turned me down. Thanks!
One of the best things that ever happened to me was getting rejected by the School of Management at SUNY at Buffalo.
In the late 80’s I was a student at the University of Buffalo (UB SUNY) as an undergrad. In my sophomore year I decided to apply to the UB’s School of Management.
MBA’s were a big deal back then and I wanted to go into international business. Even though studying international business wasn’t really a defined major in the late 80’s, the SUNY at Buffalo School of Management was the nearest, best path.
But then the School of Management rejected my application saying my GPA at the time wasn’t good enough. It was about a 3.3 and my rejection letter said I needed to have at least a 3.5. The rejection letter went on to suggest that I should just take an extra year at the University to get my GPA up, and then re-apply to the School of Management.
I didn’t agree. I was not about to waste time taking extra classes just to drive my GPA up a little bit to satisfy the university administration’s requirements.
Instead, in a search to figure out what to do I discovered that there was this other thing the University quietly offered that any student could do which was called a “Special Major”.
